I believe that Justice O’Connor was the last member of the US Supreme Court to have held an elective office prior to being named to the court. There’s something about being seasoned in the give and take of electoral politics that gives the judiciary a better feel for how their decisions will affect the ordinary American.
There’s a 3-day-old news story at the Arizona Mirror (azmirror), repeated by the Daily Cartoonist (dailycartoonist) that says Steve has retired. I guess the tanker car of orange ink has gone empty.
If you’re still reading these, Steve, I usually disagreed with you, but I often got a chuckle or a point to consider out of your strips, even when they poked me. Best wishes. I’ll keep watching here for any new ones.
Steve Benson retired: “Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and it pains me to say that Benson is stepping out of the workaday world and into retirement. It won’t be “goodbye forever,” and I certainly hope that we’ll see the occasional Benson cartoon land in the Arizona Mirror in the weeks, months and years to come”
Will there EVER be a new illustration here?? If not, I suggest GoComics drop this strip—along with “Cathy Commiserations”, “Miss Peach”, and “The New Adventures of Queen Victoria”.
SB…hope you’re feeling much better now, and thanks for letting us know. It’s a fertile season for sage cartoons, hope you get an occasional inspiration to share. Best regards.

After more than 40 years, we say a loving goodbye to Steve Benson By: Jim Small – Wednesday January 10, 2024
Like so many other longtime Arizonans, searching out the latest Steve Benson cartoon has been a part of my regular routine. Since the 1980s, he’s been skewering Arizona leaders and politicos on a regular basis, in between reminding us exactly how amazing our state is and how we need to protect both its natural and […]

Where were YOU 3 years ago?
I was …
John Doe: … at work, trying to earn a living.
Mary Moe: … still recovering from COVID.
Robin Retiree: … home watching TV, barely believing what was going down.
Mike Pence: … preparing to count the legally cast electoral votes for president.
Ron Johnson: … trying to slip an envelope of fake Wisconsin electors to Pence.
Enrique Tarrio: … leading my Proud Boys in an assault on the US Capitol.
Mike Fantone: … doing my duty.
Josh Hawley: … running for my life.
Donald Trump: … masterminding a plot to overthrow the US government.

This is Claire Ferguson Benson, Steve’s wife.
I thought you’d like to know Steve had a stroke on 21 February and is now recovering in a wonderful rehabilitation hospital.
Fortunately he was given a medication in time, which greatly increases the potential of a full, or near to full, recovery.
I expect you’ll receive this news with a mix of compassion, sorrow and good wishes for Steve and for that I thank you more than I can express.
I’ll keep you posted,
Claire xo
