Maybe the teacher overheard James complaining to a friend, “Man these leather pants chafe without underwear”, or something along those lines. I’m sure the teacher, he or she, had the best of intentions.
Knowing James he probably volunteered the information.
Probably the teacher noticed when James mooned one of his fellow students.
Maybe James was unfortunately wearing his regular pants below his waist? Well now he’s wearing his underpants, just not under his pants.
